How to get to Bacalar
Coming from Chetumal: From the main bus station in Chetumal ask for a taxi to Bacalar. Approx. cost is about $200 pesos and take about 30 minute drive if there is traffic.
Driving from the north of the state (Cancun,Playa del Carmen, Akumal,Tulum)to Bacalar:
Before leaving Cancun, fill your tank with gas. Make sure you have a good map of the Area with you, and pesos in low denominations. TOPES are speed bumps. Slow down for them. They are usually located at the entrance and exit of small Mayan villages where there will be children and animals freely running in the street-fields.. USE much caution.. Leave Cancun heading south on Hwy # 307. You will take this totally straight south, passing Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Adventuras,Akumal, and finally Tulum. From Cancun to just south of Playa del Carmen by the exit for Xcaret Park, the highway is a divided double lane highway. At Xcaret it becomes a 'three'lane highway.( If you're driving slower , please pull over to part of the shoulder, thus allowing the vehicle be hind you to pass without crashing into the oncoming traffic hence the "three" lanes.)
Through the town of Tulum it is a divided blvd. From Tulum to Felipe Carrillo Puerto, it is a single lane narrow highway with dense jungle vegetation on both sides, extremely hypnotizing in the day and extremely DANGEROUS at night.. You are driving through the Sian Kaán Biosphere region.
After this you will enter Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Gas station and an ATM are here on the main road in the main part of town. Leaving Felipe Carrillo Puerto take hwy # 307 south all the way to Bacalar. On this you will drive through some Mayan villages, after Limones you will see the new road out to Majahual.
(If coming from either Majahual or Xcalak you need to drive back out to Highway 307 and follow the directions) Do NOT take this. Stay on Hwy# 307. Now it is a new road, still under some construction, so use precautions here.. Take this south to the first exit for Bacalar.
You will see the turn off, exit left off hwy and this exit now becomes the main road into town and eventually the main ave in the downtown area. Please use caution as highway # 307 is under expansion from Tulum to Bacalar.
